This year marks the 70th anniversary of Bentley’s iconic R-Type Continental Grand Tourer. To celebrate this milestone, Bentley recently unveiled a modern interpretation of the classic model—the one-of-a-kind Continental GT Azure. This stunning coupe is a tribute to Bentley’s decades of craftsmanship, design and innovation, and it offers all of the comfort and luxury that has come to be expected from this storied brand. Let’s take a closer look at what makes this special car so unique.
What Makes the Continental GT Azure Special?
The most striking aspect of the Continental GT Azure is its exterior paint scheme. It was carefully designed to evoke the original R-Type Continental’s heritage paint scheme while still looking modern and stylish. The interior also pays homage to its predecessor with luxurious rich leather upholstery, cross banding and bespoke inlays. However, it also features all of the modern amenities you would expect from any other Bentley vehicle—including a wellness suite for maximum comfort and convenience.
The Continental GT Azure was created using Mulliner's Personal Commissioning Guide—a tool that allows customers to create their own personalized Bentleys with total freedom and flexibility. This means that no two cars will ever be exactly alike; each one will be as unique as its driver.
How Does The Continent GT Compare To Its Predecessor?
The R-Type Continental was first unveiled in 1953 as a limited production vehicle designed for long-distance touring. It featured an aerodynamic body style, lightweight materials and a powerful six-cylinder in-line engine, developing 153 bhp. In comparison, the modern interpretation of the R-Type is powered by a 542bhp V8 engine which can reach top speeds of 198 mph. While times have changed drastically since 1953, both models are emblematic of Bentley’s commitment to creating luxurious vehicles with performance capabilities like no other car on the road today.
The new Continental GT Azure is more than just a tribute to an iconic car; it is an example of how Bentley continues to stay ahead in terms of design, craftsmanship and innovation. With its combination of classic styling combined with modern amenities and performance capabilities, there really is nothing else quite like it on the road today!
